Coach Fisher's Saturday training camp report
HEAD COACH JEFF FISHER, JULY 28, 2007
(on Michael Griffin’s first practice)
It was good. We didn’t anticipate any problems. He had a really good off-season so he is in really good shape. He worked hard and he is kind of disappointed that he missed a couple practices but he will pick up right where he left off. We are very pleased with what we see and the potential that he has.
(on where he sees Kelly Herndon on the field)
Kelly is working outside now and he is doing well. He is very instinctive, and you would expect that out of somebody who has started in the league and played as much as he has, so we are going to keep him outside and let him compete outside at this point.
(on Michael Griffin getting teased during practice by the quarterbacks and running sprints after practice)
Well I can’t speak for the quarterbacks, but the quarterback’s reads are going to take them to one particular place. Keeping with “hold-outs tradition” is something that we have done with guys that have missed practice. I think he had some kind of idea it was coming, I don’t know if he knew exactly what to expect but it’s a good thing.
(on whether Vince Young had an influence on the decision to bring Biren Ealy into camp)
Vince had mentioned him on several occasions about his relationship with [Biren], but I would say that [Titans scout] C.O. Brocato had most, if not everything to do with that because C.O. was very familiar with what [Biren] did at the University of Houston.
(on how long he thinks it will take for the secondary to sort itself out and people to step up)
I said before camp started that some of these things could sort themselves out in a couple days and some of them could last all the way up to the opener. It’s a good problem to have. It is very competitive and there is a lot of talent back there so we are not in any rush. We are going to be objective and try to create competitive situations and opportunities throughout camp.
(on the new “Titan Blue” practice jerseys)
The offense looked a lot faster today, and the defense kind of liked it. I thought they would be a little disappointed because it’s been a long time since they have been in dark [jerseys], but they liked the light blue. Some of them had issues inside, in terms of what color complementary socks and gloves to wear, but they got it straightened out.
(on how he feels about the receiver rotation after the addition of Eric Moulds)
If you watch the last few practices, you see Eric making more and more plays just because he is becoming more familiar with the offense and he is very experienced. We said all along that we had interest in a veteran experienced receiver and we may have found the guy we were looking for. I’m additionally pleased in the direction, at least to this point, with the production of the rest of the receivers as well.
(on how the former newcomers are maturing into veterans)
As you mature a little bit, not only in age but experience, things get easer for you and you can emphasize different things, and that’s what we have been able to do. The guys are comfortable, they know what to do, and now you can adjust practice tempos and do different things. The enthusiasm and excitement is there. We are just in day two, but it is our job to keep it going through the middle and end part of the week because this coming week is going to get long practicing against one another. Thus far I am very pleased with how things have gone.
(on Ben Troupe’s need to return to the form of a couple years ago)
I really felt like Ben was making strides last year before the injury. The injury is the reason that he didn’t end up with the production. He worked all off-season and he knows what to do. You would expect a guy with now a few years experience would have a good understanding, and he does. He has worked hard during the off-season and it is our job as coaches to find ways to get him the ball in addition to some of the other guys that can make plays for us.
